Society of the Year Winners: Girls in Tech

Can you introduce your society to our readers?

Girls in Tech is exactly what it says on the tin, a society for girls with an interest in technology. And we really do mean interest; you don’t need to be studying Computer Science. We have members from Medicine, Business, and beyond, all united by the recognition that our world is becoming increasingly technological. Our mission is to introduce people to tech in a genuinely fun way, think AI, Internet of Things, and robotics, but taught through making matcha, painting vases, and bingo nights. We create a space where members build real skills, make great friends, and leave wondering why they ever thought tech wasn’t for them.

What have been your highlights of this year?

Two moments stand out. The first is our Freshers’ Fair stall. Before this academic year, Girls in Tech had virtually no visibility on campus. Our president, Oyin, set a bold goal from day one: a 100-attendee grand opening event. Many told her it was unrealistic, but she had tunnel vision, and it paid off. We went all out at Freshers’ Fair, pink with a purpose, using genuine sales skills to draw people in and get them excited about the grand opening. In a single day we signed up 200 members, and not only did we hit 100 attendees for the grand opening, we did it with an extensive waiting list. By second semester, the all pink stall had become our brand. We went even bigger for the second Freshers’ Fair and maintained the tradition, because it works and people know us for it. We closed the year at 365 members. That stall set the tone for everything that followed.

The second highlight was our sponsored trip to Visa headquarters, made possible by TotalJobs. They covered our travel and gave every attendee a £15 gift voucher because they genuinely believed in what Girls in Tech was doing. We were in the room with recruiters from companies like WTW and BAE Systems, it was a real testament to how far the society had come in just one year.

How does it feel to have been recognised with a Guild Award?

It feels surreal. What makes it especially meaningful is that it wasn’t just the committee celebrating, the moment we won, one of our members messaged the group chat saying “we did it.” That says everything. The members showed up, made friends, got involved, and they felt the win too. It truly belongs to all of them.

And for our president Oyin, this was personal. Back in August, before the academic year had even begun, winning Society of the Year was the very first goal on her list. To have achieved it is something we will never forget.

What are you looking forward to for next year?

We are so excited about the possible incoming committee. They already get it, they understand the vision, they have hit the ground running with social media, and they have made clear they want to carry Girls in Tech forward, not just maintain it. They want to grow it. We have every confidence that there are more wins to come.

In under 10 words, why should our readers join our society?

“Events so fun, you forget they’re CV-worthy.”
