Galentine’s Day: The Best Foodie Adventures for You and Your Gal Pals

Whether you’re wifed off or hopelessly single, Galentine’s Day is for you.

Described on Urban Dictionary as a day ‘when you celebrate your love for your lady friends’ if you’re ‘single or no’, Galentine’s is a day for you and your girls to forget all about the imminent doom of V-day, and let loose.

In honour of Galentine’s day, here at LGSM we have cultivated some ideas of how you can celebrate with the leading ladies in your life.

Whether you’re the fancier friends who choose to dress up and paint the town red, or the cosier squad who would rather have a night in involving rom-coms, wine and lots of food; we have the thing for you. So, grab the girls and forget your boy drama for the night.

Going Out (OUT)

We all love a good excuse to get dressed up and go for a cheeky drink with our mates; and what more of a reason do we need than Galentine’s? From the sophisticated botanical cocktails of The Florist, to the ‘ultimate ladies night out’ at Balls Deep Bar, Liverpool has a lot to offer this Galentine’s for your girl gang…

Floral fun @ The Florist

With their neon lights and botanical décor, The Florist is a literal wonderland on our doorstep. The dream place for a girl’s night, the menu consists of dishes that are ‘perfect for sharing’ and cocktails ‘inspired by floristry and influenced by sass’!

Situated on Hardman Street, The Florist is less than a ten-minute walk from campus, making it the ideal destination with your friends after a hard day of lectures on Thursday. The Florist seems to get celebrating the girls, with their limited edition ‘Birds of Prey’ cocktail menu in honour of the new DC movie that screams Girl Power. So, if you’re looking for an insta-worthy night with the added bonus of sophistication, checkout their various menus here.

Cosy Cocktails @ The Sphinx Bar

If you want to keep it even closer to home, then the Guild’s very own Sphinx Bar could also be just the place for all your Galentine’s needs.

Their cocktail menu has a variety of cocktails to suit the taste of even the fussiest of friends. From their 2 for £7 selection of classics, to more bespoke cocktails such as the ‘Thank U, Next’ or the ‘On Wednesdays, We Wear Pink’, The Sphinx may be just what you need for a budget girl’s night. The rustic wooden décor and warm fairy lights also makes our student bar a cosy place to visit if it’s something more low-key that you’re looking for but still with the luxury of leaving the house.

Address: Guild of Students, 160 Mount Pleasant, Liverpool L3 5TR

Release your inner-child @ Balls Deep

For the crazier girl gangs out there, the Galentine’s event at Ball’s Deep Liverpool may be what you’re looking for. Home to Liverpool’s only adult ball pool, the bar is certainly a bucket list-worthy night out. And what better night to tick it off than Galentine’s? The bar is hosting an event especially for all of us girls to ‘celebrate the love for our lady friends’. The event itself channels the craziness of the bar, with a live ‘Magic Mike’ set and a performance from Shauna Lundy, ‘fire entertainer’. There will be also be free access to the ball pit all night, and a free glass of prosecco when you arrive. This event is probably more suited for those who don’t have a 9am on Friday morning as it is seeming to be one of the messier Galentine’s nights that Liverpool has to offer. You can purchase tickets on Skiddle.

Address: 13-21 Seel Street, Liverpool, L1 4AU

Staying in

Going out isn’t for everyone. In fact, even those of us who love a good night out need a break sometimes, and Galentine’s is looking like the perfect reason for a girls night in! With the possibilities of a ‘boyfriend bonfire’ a la Friends, or a DIY cocktail night, you’re sure to find something fun for the whole gang.

Get Creative: DIY Cocktails

Just because you’re not going out, it doesn’t mean that you can’t still be boujee and treat yourselves to some homemade cocktails. This is a good one as it allows you to be as crazy as you choose, whether you follow a strict recipe, make up your own (dangerous) or go for a mocktail, it’s sure to be a laugh.

If you’re really looking to go all out, Ikea sell a cocktail shaker for £4.50 that comes with the measurements for some of the classics on the side. A cocktail evening is an ideal way to chill with the girls and celebrate your friendship; just stick on one of the Girl’s Night playlists on Spotify, or simply combine all your fave tunes to keep you dancing as you create and drink the cocktails.

Go Psycho: The Boyfriend Bonfire

When life goes a bit pear-shaped, I find the best thing to do is to turn to Friends. The antics of the six besties (in particular Monica, Rachel and Phoebe), can provide solace to our own hopeless love lives. In ‘The one with the candy hearts’ in Season 1, the girls decide to spend their Valentine’s night having a bonfire/ritual to rid themselves of all the negative energy that was inevitably brought into their lives by boys!

Now, when I say boyfriend bonfire, I mean it metaphorically because we don’t want any fire alarms going off like in said episode of Friends. Instead of starting any actual fires, it would be safer to compile everyone’s pictures, love letters and whatever other mementos you each have from relationships, put them in a box and then in a few months you can reminisce on the dodgy relationships you once endured. You could even get the “Monica” of the group to whip up some treats for if you need any post-ritual snacks. I’m thinking cookie dough, cupcakes, maybe even indulge in a tub of Ben and Jerry’s!

Live through Lara Jean: Watch the new ‘To All the Boys’ Film on Netflix

No girl’s night is complete without a cheesy rom-com. A Bridget Jones binge is the obvious choice to remind us that there’s hope for everyone to find their own Mark Darcy. However, just this week, Netflix released the sequel to their popular hit To All the Boys I’ve Loved BeforeTo All the Boys: P.S I Still Love You.

The timeliness of the release means that Galentine’s would make the perfect night for a movie night, complete with popcorn, pizza and a bottle of rosé (if you’re feeling frivolous). Perhaps you could even treat yourself to dessert from The Midnight Delivery (based at the Baltic Market and on Smithdown Road) to comfort yourself in the fact that you don’t have your own Peter Kavinsky. So, gather your girl squad and experience Lara Jean’s heartbreak and happiness all without the stress of it actually happening to you.
