Down The Hatch | Review

Recently many people had started telling me about this funky vegan restaurant called Down The Hatch, which is located at 62 Duke Street in Liverpool City Centre. Being a huge foodie and a vegetarian myself, I had to give this place a try and review the menu to see if its worth all the hype.

The Vibe

The restaurant is located underground and from the outside, it can easily be missed, with stairs going down to the entrance. This only adds to the restaurants quirky vibe and the underground location makes it feel like a real hidden gem. Inside the decor is cosy with warm lighting, classic brick walls and wooden furnishings/flooring. The staff were very welcoming and laid back which enhances the friendly feel.

The Food

The whole menu is either vegan or vegetarian using soy mince patty, seitan and bratwurst as a meat alternative in certain dishes. The menu has a range of different delicious starters from cauliflower buff tings to halloumi fingers. We ordered sweetcorn ribs and jackfruit nuggets which went down a treat which I would definitely recommend.

When it came to the mains, we were spoilt for choice with a range of different burgers and hotdogs, to home cooked lasagne and Goan curry. The menu states that it serves only junk food, so if you’re a health fanatic, this may not be the restaurant for you. We ordered the American hotdog and the classic burger which was hard not to love.

Although the menu is all vegan/vegetarian this is a great place to pig out if you’re a meat eater too, due to the range of different foods and meat substitutes which taste just as delicious as the real thing.

The Price

All of the starters are either £5.00 or £6.00 each and the hotdogs and burgers were no more than £11.00. Although this may be a bit out of a student budget the mains did come with a huge side portion of skinny fries.

If you’re feeling fancy, cocktails were fun and unique to the restaurant and were priced at £7.50 to £8.00 (or you could get two for £12!)

Overall this is a wonderful little discovery with a great choice of vegan junk food to indulge in. With a reasonably priced menu, cosy interior and welcoming staff, this is a place you cannot avoid.
