Ash Live at The Dome

On the 13th of February, Northern Irish Rock trio Ash played The Dome in Liverpool. The sell-out crowd enjoyed an evening of the band’s biggest hits and gems from their latest album ‘Ad Astra’

The Dome is very well placed due to its location on Hardman street, so it’s a great venue to saunter down to from campus. This was my second trip to the Dome and both times I’ve found the staff to be great, and the bars are reasonable priced as concert venues go these days. It is a fairly chilly venue, but given the heat of some concerts that is no bad thing.

I absolutely loved the band’s merchandise blind bags which are think are absolutely inspired. I was very excited when a concert goer next to me was opening his, and from what I could see the bags were well worth £30 as it contained a t-shirt and two cds. It’s a really great way to tour sustainably, and add a bit of excitement while waiting for the concert to begin.

Support was provided by Ireland and Liverpool’s Dead Raze. It was really great to see a local band in the spotlight, and I’d recommend checking them out if you get the chance. They played their latest single ‘Feeling’ which had only been released that morning, so it was a pleasure to hear it live. The crowd really got behind the band, and it was a great start to the evening.

Dead Raze

I headed down to the gig with Marketing Officer Chloe. She didn’t know anything about the band going into the gig, but we both really enjoyed it. Ash are a great ‘live’ band because of their strong sound and catchy lyrics. Chloe didn’t find her enjoyment quashed by not knowing the band’s back discography. There were also a lot of kids in the crowd who all seemed to be having a lot of fun.

The setlist was a really great mix of the band’s back catalogue. I enjoyed ‘Fun People’ particularly, which features Blur (and the cheese industry)’s Graham Coxon. One of the other highlights was their cover of calypso classic ‘Jump In The Line’. It bought a really fun energy to the concert and the crowd really enjoyed it. I’d recommend checking out the whole album when you get the chance to.

Ash’s big hits like ‘Girl From Mars’ and ‘Kung Fu’ sounded fantastic live. There really is something special about hearing the base, the drums and the vocals of a song live that you can’t capture in a recording. All three members of the band gave it their all, and the crowd gave It was a great evening, I will definitely catch Ash again in the future.
