RGSU Safety Survey Launches- Everything you need to know

Last week, Guild Deputy President Holly Thompson launched the Russel Group Students Union’s survey to investigate student’s experiences with gender based violence. Alongside Lily from the University of Newcastle, and Amara from the University of Leeds, Holly is working hard to lobby the Russel Group’s Universities and SU’s, as well as national government. This survey will support their vital work.

Holly told me this:

No student should ever feel unsafe or experience harm while at university. Unfortunately, gender-based violence remains a significant issue within UK higher education, with particular groups at increased risk.

This is why today we’re launching a survey, with other Students’ Unions across the Russell Group to gather students’ experiences and perceptions of safety related to gender-based violence across Russell Group universities.

Gender-based violence describes any harmful act perpetrated against a person based on socially ascribed/gender differences or gender hierarchies. It includes acts of causing physical, sexual or mental harm or suffering, or threats of such acts, and other deprivations of liberty. This encompasses, but is not limited to, sexual, verbal, emotional, physical, financial as well as coercive and controlling behaviours by a partner, ex-partner or family member, harassment in various forms, stalking, and many other behaviours and actions.

We will use the finding of this survey to lobby both our universities and, government, alongside other Unions in the Russell Group for greater action.

This survey will be open from 12th November to 12th December.
