INDIKA Festival 2025: Finding Calm through Sahaja Yoga Meditation

Running from the 17th of October to the 31st of October 2025 for its 40th year, the Liverpool Indika festival hosted by MILAP has again brought to the city an exciting celebration of Indian culture and arts. From music and dance performances to food parties and meditation sessions, the Indika festival has offered something for everyone, therefore inspiring, educating and entertaining people of all backgrounds.

On the 20th of October, I attended a session with Sahaja Yoga Meditation, a group that meets every week in Liverpool, and for two weeks held classes in collaboration with the Indika Festival. As someone who enjoys yoga, this session was particularly intriguing to me, and I was eager to find out what Sahaja yoga entailed. The session started with an introduction into the practise, tracing its origins to its founder Shri Mataji Nirmala Devi who found self-realisation through spirituality, leading her to develop the theory behind Sahaja yoga meditation.

The class then had the opportunity to give it a go, as we were led through the meditation techniques that would start the inward journey of connecting with ourselves. With no mats or special clothing needed, the process proved to be straightforward, done simply from a seated position. The goal was to set the conditions for the awakening of the dormant Spiritual Energy, Kundalini. This involved movement of the arms, grounding techniques, and affirmations. Subtle vibrations and temperature changes in the palms were good indications that the process was successful.

Overall, the session introduced me to a new, community-led approach to meditation and yoga. It proved to be a calming experience, reminding me of the importance of finding time for meditation and mindfulness in the hustle and bustle of everyday life.
