On Thursday the 4th of December, students from all three Liverpool Universities will join together to protest against gender based violence and for safer streets.
Last week University of Liverpool students came together to start creating banners which will be used at the protest. I attended one of these banner making sessions with our social media secretary Chloe to get ready to attend the march. It had a fantastic atmosphere, and I really enjoyed the chance to get together with likeminded people. We shared a lot of laughs, but also discussed some of the experiences which were motivating us to march.
The campaign is being led by our hardworking and passionate Deputy President Holly Thompson. Holly has been working tirelessly since assuming office last academic year to fight for women and minority genders to feel safe on our streets and campus. Reclaim the Night is the ideal chance for us to support her vital work.
Ahead of the March, Holly said this:
‘It is more important than ever before that we show that we are against gender based violence. There has been a rise of right wing views which not only weaponises women’s rights but are harmful for our safety, access to healthcare, trans rights and more. Being safe should not be a privilege. Let’s make this the biggest Liverpool march and show that enough is enough.’
