For Mischief Night, Luvcat immersed her fans into the world of Wonderland to celebrate the release of their debut album ‘Viscious Delicious’, which would be released just five hours later! The magic began upon entrance, with every attendee being handed a red rose on their way in – a personal touch Sophie Morgan (front of Luvcat) organised with a local florist. Many fans had dressed for the occasion, sporting Halloween costumes that matched the cursed aesthetic of ‘Vicious Delicious’.

Fans had been eagerly waiting inside Kaz since doors opened at 5pm, with the unique space of the venue providing opportunity to sit on benches in front of the stage, stand with room to dance, or observe the whole scene from the upper-tier seating. After grabbing a drink, the balcony seating took our fancy and we waited for Luvcat to make their 7pm start. Sophie took to the stage as the Alice within the Wonderland, along with White Rabbit on keys, Mad Hatter on guitar and the King of Hearts on drums.
They began with ‘Lipstick’, the opener of the album, to which Sophie followed up with a short speech to express her excitement about their Halloween album release – she ‘couldn’t be happier’ to have secured this date! They followed up with the albums second track, ‘Alien’, which a group of fans came prepared for with Alien stuffed toys held in hand and every lyric nailed! The third track was ‘Matador’, a fan favourite that Sophie explained was written about a musician she kept encountering in the Kazimier Gardens and became infatuated with. The haunting love song follows this unrequited love, as a broken-hearted Sophie would watch him perform and gain more and more fame. Ultimately, she wrote this song and it led her back to the Kazimier Garden – a full circle moment!
Next up was ‘Love & Money’, a love song I thought had quite a Sabrina Carpenter-esque sound to it, followed by ‘Spider’ a fittingly spooky song from the record about a liar that Sophie pictures with ‘eight beady eyes and eight legs’. ‘Emma Dilemma’ expressed Sophie’s love for her mum’s crazy best friend, before following on with another platonic love song for her bandmates and the career journey they have been on over the last couple of years. In an emotional introduction, Sophie shared that ‘Blushing’ almost didn’t make it onto the record until the boys (her bandmates) bullied her into re-recording it in the studio. The song encapsulates the bands roller-coaster few years, moving in real-time from pub gigs to even bigger shows as she fell more and more in love with performing. She pointed out the lyrics “And the band’s kickin’ off, we’ll be big in Japan / But it’s just me and you in McDonald’s and you’re holdin’ my hand” as the perfect encapsulation of what it is like to have your career taking off, but what matters most is ‘playing with these four gorgeous boys’. The Wonderland scene became even more magical as the band explained they had first met at Sophie’s Alice in Wonderland themed party a few years ago!

The Scouse support certainly felt prominent within the room – as the lyrics name dropped the likes of Smithdown Road and the Jacaranda!
Following on was ‘He’s My Man’ – the bands top streamed song on Spotify – a murder ballad which they have recently revisited with Dr. John Cooper Clarke to record an Anniversary edition, with his spoken word poetry accompanying the songs sinister tone. The penultimate song was ‘Viscious Delicious’, the album’s title song, all about a “hell-raiser who would swing from the chandeliers”. Finally, the band ended with ‘Dinner @ Brasserie Zédel’ which had all the audience singing along throughout the dramatic chorus. The setlist celebrated both new and old Luvcat, amplifying fans excitement for both the launch and getting their hands on some signed merch!

Shortly after the set, Sophie (no longer Alice) re-entered to the queue of fans awaiting her to sign their cds, posters, and merch! Every fan was entitled to a record store tour poster personally signed by Sophie, or merch was on sale within the venue with a range of alternate posters and clothing items available. Sophie took her time with fans, conversing and taking photos, and recognising whom appeared to be devoted fans (who she gifted their giant cardboard-cutout lipstick!). The band had a huge signing book for fans to write messages for Sophie, a thoughtful way to personalise the tour on both ends!

The occasion felt a passionate ode to Luvcat’s Liverpool heritage, journey as a band, and appreciation for their loyal fans… I can’t wait to see what is next for them!
