The Magic Mod: Live Review

When I interviewed Ben Taylor, aka The Magic Mod, ahead of his show at The Blackstock Market, he told me about magic’s ability to make anyone feel like a child again. After seeing one of his incredible shows, I could not agree more.

On the 25th of October, I headed over to the Blackstock Market with our fabulous Marketing Officer Chloe. Before I review the actual show, I will mention that The Blackstock Market isn’t the most acessible venue for Students. We took the bus from town to the nearest stop, but did not feel safe walking over to the market. There was some parking there, but if you don’t have access to a car, I would recommend taking a taxi to and from. Don’t let that deter you, but you will need to factor in that cost (especially if planning a solo trip).

Ahead of the show, myself and Chloe were unsure what to expect from the show. Neither of us had seen a magic show since primary school birthday parties. After speaking to Ben ahead of the show, my expectations were high and without a doubt they were met.

The Magic Mod’s show takes place in two compelling acts. As a true magician never reveals their secrets, I won’t say too much about the show’s actual tricks. They were a great blend of magical traditions, like card tricks and cups and balls, and a modern, more adult twist. The ‘Mod’ influences in style and theming add a flourish and clear trademark to the show. The show is filled with humour, and succeeds in never feeling like it’s for children which could so easily happen with magic. There were plenty of laugh out loud moments, and a perfect amout of audience participation. If that’s not your thing, then you don’t have to get involved, but lots of people in our crowd were keen to help out.

In his interview, Ben spoke to me about his magical inspirations. Tommy Cooper is one of his idols, and that shines through in the show. Ben told me how difficult it is to make tricks look like they’ve gone wrong, as it requires a higher level of mastery. This is without a doubt something he has achived. At one point Chloe and I were genuinely sympathetic as we were fully convinced that the trick had gone wrong. After some masterful acting, the trick’s real ending was revealed and we were both stunned.

Overall, I would thoroughly recommend attending one of The Magic Mod’s shows. It’s a great night out, and would be a great trip out with family or friends. It may be unusual to spend your Saturday night at a magic show, but I absolutely loved it!
